Planning Division
The Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP) is the national governing body of the planning profession. Planners who are full members, meeting combined educational and experience requirements, may use the title "Member of the Canadian Institute of Planners" (MCIP).

The Atlantic Planners Institute (API) is the local Affiliate of CIP, covering the four Atlantic Provinces. It has local branches which govern the profession in each province: New Brunswick Association of Planners, Licensed Professional Planners Association of Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island Association of Planners, and Newfoundland and Labrador Branch Atlantic Planners Institute.

The Licensed Professional Planners Association of Nova Scotia (LPPANS) is the provincial branch of API and licenses professional planners based in that province. Only members in good standing with both LPPANS and CIP are issued licenses. Licensed members may use the title "Licensed Professional Planner" (LPP) and their conduct is controlled by the NS Professional Planners Act and the LPPANS Bylaw.

The Canadian Association of Certified Planning Technicians is a non-profit, self-governing body dedicated to maintaining high standards for Planning Technicians and other related planning professionals nationally. Full members meeting combined technical educational and experience requirements use the title "Certified Planning Technician" (CPT).

Nova Scotia Municipal Affairs is the provincial department responsible for supporting municipal planning efforts, administering the planning system as set out in the Municipal Government Act, and issuing Statements of Provincial Interest. The Prince Edward Island Department of Finance, Energy and Municipal Affairs is the provincial department responsible for planning in areas where municipal planning is not in effect, supporting municipalities that take on planning efforts, and administering the planning system as set out in the Planning Act.
