Stranded Assets?
Are office buildings largely redundant now: temples to a dying dynasty rendered obsolete by technology? If so, where does that leave Central Business Districts (CBDs) in Atlantic Canada if their raison d’etre has diminished or departed? Since the end of the pandemic the case for and against in-person office use has raged in the media with arguments for and against working from home taking center stage. Time, we think, to separate fact from rhetoric.
Property Taxes—Nova Scotia Less Opaque: Ontario More So!
The Nova Scotia Public Utility and Review Board’s (PURB) many responsibilities include property tax appeals. The Provincial assessment authority, a.k.a. Property Valuation Services Corporation (PVSC), denied the property owner’s agent (us) access to all of the information on which they had based their assessed value despite being instructed to do so by the Nova Scotia Assessment Appeal Tribunal. PVSC promptly appealed the Tribunal’s decision to the PURB. We now have the latter’s decision! Meanwhile, in Ontario, the provincial government has deferred the provincial re-assessment for the seventh time and all in the interests of “fairness, affordability and business competitiveness”!
Valuation: A Universal Process?
Our (newish) colleague from Dubai reflects on valuation methodology in the United Arab Emirates versus Canada and discovers that terminology may differ in the lands of sun and snow but the process is surprisingly similar.
